Bioscientist begins three-year project to investigate proteins linked to cancer

Dr Neil Kad of the School of Biosciences has been awarded almost £1m as co-investigator of a project looking at new ways to target proteins linked to many types of cancer.

The funding, from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), will be split between Kent and the University of Bath to support three years’ of research.

Dr Kad will examine peptides – short chains of amino acids – by using visualisation techniques at incredibly small scales to see how individual molecules interact.

The researchers will screen large numbers of different peptides in a search for those with potential to inhibit the action of the target proteins. This could help further advance the understanding of the causes of certain cancers and their potential cure.
