A celebration to highlight the positive impact that group singing can have on people with Parkinson’s disease will be held at the Colyer-Fergusson Music Building on 30 April (15.00-18.00).
The Caring Through Singing Celebration will mark the 10th anniversary of local charity Canterbury Cantata Trust and will raise vital funds for the Parkinson’s Centre for Integrated Therapy, a partnership between the University, the national charity Parkinson’s Care and Support UK, and the Kent Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre.
The Centre will be the first of its kind in the UK to provide the therapies, knowledge, tools and social community needed to overcome many of the physical and mental limitations imposed by Parkinson’s disease.
Group singing is one of the therapies that will be offered at the Centre.
The fundraising celebration will be an uplifting, inclusive event and will feature local singing groups and guests including the Skylarks, Amici Singers, Monday Music, Canterbury Singers and Herne Bay Junior School.
All members of the general public are welcome to attend.
Elizabeth Gordon, Chief Executive of Parkinson’s Care and Support UK, said: ‘It is wonderful that we are able to put on a celebratory singing event to raise money for the UK’s first Parkinson’s Centre for Integrated Therapy. Singing can improve posture, vocal strength and mental health; all which can diminish due to Parkinson’s. We look forward to welcoming as many people as possible to this fun and interactive gathering.’
Free tickets for the event can be booked via the Gulbenkian website, with a suggested donation fee of £15.
