Professor Karen Cox and Dr Mohamed Sakel among NHS70 ‘most influential’ staff

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Karen Cox and Dr Mohamed Sakel, Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the School of Engineering and Digital Arts (EDA), have been named among the NHS’s most influential staff members as part of its 70th Anniversary celebrations.

Professor Cox, who became Vice-Chancellor in August 2017, is one of the ‘70 most influential nurses and midwives from 1948 to 2018’. A registered nurse and professor of cancer and palliative care, she has held a number of clinical posts in oncology and community health. She continues to serve on the Board of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, the UK regulator for over 675,000 Nurses and Midwives across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Dr Sakel, a member of EDA since 2010, has made the top 70 in a poll of health and social care’s standout stars of the last 70 years. A Consultant Physician and Director of Neuro-Rehabilitation and Research & Development at the East Kent University Foundation Hospitals Trust, he has worked closely on a number of joint projects with EDA. Recent projects include the first clinical trials of robotic legs for patients with mobility problems and, in a collaboration with colleagues from the School of Psychology, research into Parkinson’s Disease.

The NHS turns 70 on 5 July 2018.
