Kent students have major beneficial impact on local community

Students at Kent continue to have a widespread positive impact in Canterbury, Medway and the wider Kent region in areas ranging from volunteering and charitable giving to economic impact.

For example, students spend around £250m off-campus in the region, which supports some 2,500 jobs. This follows on from a recent report by Experian that found 28% of all spend in Canterbury comes from students at university in the city.

Furthermore, since 2010 a staggering 140 businesses have been formed in the South East by students from the University of Kent, boosting the local economy and providing new employment opportunities.

Many students also volunteer with local charities, such as the Kent branch of Service by Emergency Response Volunteers (SERV), while others donate regularly to charity, with 23 tonnes of goods such as books and clothes given to the British Heart Foundation last year.

To celebrate this impact the University is running a poster campaign at bus stops and billboards across Canterbury and Medway from 9 to 22 October highlighting these areas of positive engagement that students bring to Kent.
