This year, students donated over 5 tonnes of unwanted items to charity, which was more than double the amount in 2015.

These items included clothes, shoes, books, bags, dvds etc. which was donated to the British Heart Foundation.

Students also donated more than 300 kilos of unused food to the charity FareShare.

Since 2014, the University’s Waste and Recycling Team has encouraged students to donate any items before they left the Canterbury campus at the end of the academic year. During the ‘clear out’ period from the 13 to the 18 June 2016, almost 4 tonnes was collected which is 1 tonne more than the full month of June in 2015.

During the last week of term in June, students donated unused food such as tinned goods, pasta, sauces, rice, cereal, coffee etc. The donations were sorted at the FareShare Ashford warehouse and food boxes were created for those in need. A food box will feed a family for five days and donations from the University created 16 boxes which will help struggling families. The University is aiming to run the scheme at the end of each academic term.
