Public invited to attend event on Wednesday 14 November on the Canterbury campus.
Professor Richardson, from the School of English, will discuss the difference between London and the provinces in Shakespeare’s time, and what that might tell us about access to culture in the present day.
She will frame the talk by considering why people who live within and outside cities often still hold pejorative views of what life is like in rural areas; how the two spaces inform our thinking, our creativity and the balance between cultural production and consumption.
The talk will focus on how these issues were thought about in early modern England, exploring who and what travelled between London and provincial towns, and just how different life and opportunities were between them, forming patterns that are still recognisable today.
The lecture will take place in Grimond Lecture Theatre 1 from 18:00 and will be followed by a drinks reception in the Grimond Foyer. The event is free to attend and there is free parking on campus from 17.00. Those interested in attending are asked to register online.
