Lunchtime Concert: Robert Mitchell: The Illusion of One Hand

Wednesday 23 November, 1.10pm, Colyer-Fergusson Hall, University of Kent

Leading British jazz pianist and composer Robert Mitchell presents a special illustrated recital, featuring figures from the history of left-hand-only piano in classical and jazz music.

Robert has been composing, recording and talking about left hand only piano music since 2008. His album 'The Glimpse' (2013 Whirlwind) was widely hailed - as a unique mix containing left hand only piano music from Mompou, Hersch, Mitchell as well as several improvised miniatures.  He will include looking at music by CPE Bach through Geza Zichy, Leopold Godowsky, Phineas Newborne Jr, Fred Hersch, Borah Bergman and more. The performance will include works by Mompou, Ponce and Saint-Saëns alongside originals and improvisations. He will also argue the case for inclusion of this music in the piano syllabus There will be a question and answer session at the end of the event.

Prof. Robert Mitchell is one of the most significant voices in British jazz – a pianist, keyboardist, composer, improviser, writer, poet and so much more. As Gilles Peterson put it in reaction to one of Mitchell’s most recent albums with his trio Epiphany 3 – “a very important, influential musician” and a relentless seeker and thinker, encompassing many art forms, musical genres and constantly pushing the envelope. Robert Mitchell is proud to have been a Steinway artist for over a decade.  He has played with Billy Harper, Greg Osby, Courtney Pine CBE, Alicia Olatuja, Orphy Robinson, Steve Coleman, Phil Ranelin, Omar Puente, Ernesto Simpson, Daymé Arocena, Jason Rebello, Shirley Smart, Basement Jaxx, Dub Colossus, Daniel Casimir, Joshua Redman, and Jacqui Dankworth MBE amongst many others. He is a Piano Professor at the Guildhall School Of Music (Jazz Dept) and a Principal Piano Lecturer at Leeds Conservatoire (Jazz). Robert was conferred as a professor at the Guildhall in June 2022.
