  • Person:

    : Johnson, Hewlett, Revd., 1874-1966

: Johnson, Nowell Mary, Mrs., 1906-1983 (2nd wife of Hewlett Johnson, born Nowell Mary Edwards)

  • Date:

    1952

    1963 (circa)

  • Brief description:

A set of black and white prints, most of which show the 35ft long Chinese petition against the alledged use of "germ warfare" by the Americans during the Korean War which Nowell and Hewlett Johnson brought back from China in 1952.

According to newspaper reports at the time the petition was to have been lodged with the Library of Canterbury Cathedral. However the prints which show the petition on the floor of the Johnson house in New Street, to which they retired in April 1963. The envelope in which the prints were stored bears a caption suggesting that the petition was brought back to this country in 1956, but this is obviously a mistake by Nowell, in whose hand the inscription is written.

PET17, 17a and 18 show a copy of "O Poder Sovietico", or "The Soviet Power" by Hewlett Johnson. 17 and 17a also show a publication entitled "Conseils et Recettes" par Tante Marie, and 18 one called "Le vrai visage de L'Union Sovetique"- another translation of one of Hewlett's books.
