    Material relating to Dion Boucicault's stay in the United States from 1853 to 1860

    item 1 -- 1 letter from a correspondent at Lloyds Register of Shipping in response to a query about vessels sailing from the UK to New York on August 10th, 1853, the day Dion Boucicault embarked for the United States; the letter lists ships, but can provide no information as to which vessel Boucicault sailed on;

    item 2 -- 2 photocopies of adverts in The Spirit of the Times for a series of weekly lectures by "Mr. Dion Bourcicault" [sic], titled "Winter Evenings", to be given at the Hope Chapel, New York during December 1853;

    item 3 -- photocopy of Dion Boucicault's "A letter in defense of the stage", addressed to the "Rev. Henry Ward Beecher", who was an outspoken critic of theatrical entertainments; the original is held by Yale University Library;

    item 4 -- draft of a letter from Christopher Calthrop to Albert E. Johnson, citing excepts from The Era and The Spirit of the Times related to Dion Boucicault's and Agnes Robertson's activities in 1858; Calthrop also mentions that he owns the manuscript of Dion Clayton Calthrop's first play, The Old Country, which he is offering for sale to either the library of Johnson's university (Memphis State University), or to the University of New York.
