Teaching with Special Collections & Archives

Special Collections & Archives at the University includes a wide range of subjects, materials and media. From British stand-up comedy to early photography, Victorian theatre to modern political cartoons, the collections can support diverse teaching areas and needs.

Our material is available for teaching purposes to University staff. You can hold seminars for up to 20 students in the Special Collections reading room, or we can provide digital surrogates for use outside of the Templeman Library.

We expect all staff and students to follow our guidelines for handling material. Special Collections & Archives materials can't be removed from the reading room.

Seminars and student visits

We can offer hands-on sessions for groups of students as part of a taught session, led by the course tutor. Using a range of archival and rare resources to explore a topic, the students will be able to:

  • handle historic and unique objects
  • learn more about the collections at Kent
  • develop their skills in analysing and using primary source materials in their research

Members of our team will be on hand to offer expertise on the collections, how to handle the materials, and ways in which students might further explore the materials.

We can also arrange "introduction to the collections" sessions, facilitated by members of the Special Collections & Archives team.

If you are interested in holding a session in Special Collections & Archives, please contact us well in advance to discuss materials, topics and the structure of the session. We are very happy to meet with you to develop and discuss assignments using collections material.

Available Monday - Friday 09:30 – 16:30

Introductory talks

As well as bringing students into the archives, members of our team can come to arranged sessions to give a brief introduction to the collections and how to access them.

If you are interested in arranging introductory talks, please get in touch with us at an early stage of planning to discuss options.

Available Monday - Friday 09:00 – 17:00

Digital access

You can access a number of our collections online, including the British Cartoon Archive and the Muggeridge Collections of photographs.

We can also provide digital copies of some resources for use outside the Templeman Library.

To request digital images to support your teaching please contact us well in advance, as they take time to produce.

Conferences and staff visits

The variety of materials in the collections provides excellent support for conferences, via exhibition, visits or receptions. Please contact us at the early stages of planning venues and events.

We can also host visits of staff interested in learning more about the collections. Please contact us with sufficient notice, so that we can arrange visits at a mutually convenient time. There is a minimum number of five individuals for each visit.
