Victorian and Edwardian Theatre:
Spring Term 2014

During the spring term of 2014, second year Drama students were taught by Prof. Ken Pickering, Mark Woolgar and Jane Gallagher (Senior Special Collections Assistant), intensively using materials from Special Collections, with an emphasis upon the study of archives in research of nineteenth and early twentieth century theatre.

The students split into six groups and selected a topic of interest which they researched using the University of Kent's Theatre and Performance Archives, with access to other archives in the UK and online. Their findings were presented as an exhibition in six parts in the Templeman Gallery (Level 1 East) from 8 April until 9 May 2014.

A summary of each group's work and their argument is below.

Exhibition launch

The exhibition launch took place at 6pm on Monday 7 April 2014 in the Templeman Gallery space.

The students arranged the launch and invited members of the academic and support staff, friends, family and external guests who enjoyed the launch and talking to group members about their work:

Really liked the authentic sketches and posters

a great variety of subjects, well researched and presented in an interesting manner

Orange table was charming, and particular care was taken on the floor timeline – very clever

Enjoyed reading about the costume and the drawing from the Lyceum Group had an excellent part about the prices and their equivalence at the time. Overall the exhibition felt very professional

It was fascinating, I was blown away and would change nothing.

Loved it, I like how it was all separated. Very informative

A wonderful worth-while event and I loved the sequence of exhibits

All the images – photos, drawings and books with photos looked great. Loved the whole thing
