Richard teaches broadcast journalism production at the Centre for Journalism, as well as academic classes on war reporting and propaganda. He is a BAFTA-winning former television director and was a member of the Frontline News Television agency. Richard has produced TV news for broadcast clients all over the world including all the UK terrestrial news channels. He specialised in investigations with difficult access, has worked with presenters including Ross Kemp, and often does his own camerawork.
Richard’s own experience of frontline news gathering was the starting point for his scholarly research into the culture and practice of foreign news gathering in areas of conflict. He has conducted fieldwork in Iraq, Ukraine and on newsgathering in Syria. Richard’s PhD thesis explored the ways in which war reporters work with their sources in the field, and how that has changed over time.
