At the Centre for Journalism (CfJ), we welcome people from diverse backgrounds around the world who share our passion for telling powerful stories (whether in print or on television). Our commitment to you is to turn you into a highly skilled multimedia professional who will help shape the future of this global industry.
As a CfJ graduate, you'll join our family of alumni who work in television, radio, online and print newsrooms on every continent, producing brilliant content that keeps audiences informed, educated and entertained.
NCTJ accredited: the passport to a job in journalism
Our programmes are fully accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ), the professional body most widely acknowledged by editors in the industry. NCTJ accreditation is the hallmark of excellence in journalism training, providing a world-class industry standard that is recognised throughout the media.
This means you can graduate not just with a university degree, but also with an NCTJ Diploma – the closest thing there is to a passport to a job in UK journalism.
CfJ selected to help train BBC journalists
CfJ is the selected Learning Provider for a new BBC Senior Journalist Apprenticeship for graduate-level journalists. Delivery of training began at CfJ in January 2022.
We believe the best way for you to become a media professional is for us to treat you as a media professional from day one. That’s why so much of our teaching takes place in newsrooms and broadcast studios rather than in lecture theatres. There's no better way for you to learn how to be a journalist or a TV producer than by doing the job!
At CfJ, you're taught by award-winning editors, reporters, producers, correspondents and academics in a supportive environment. Our famous open-door policy means that students can drop by for a one-to-one chat with a member of the academic team at almost any hour of the working week.

Making television
If you're looking to get into TV production, there's no better business card than a CV full of work experience at a real broadcaster. You'll gain practical experience not just studying television, but actually making it.
These TV shows and documentaries made by our students became their passports to amazing jobs with the likes of ITN, ENVY Post Productions and more.
We have two radio stations and a TV studio at the Centre. The facilities are incredible.
State-of-the art facilities
Our state-of-the-art newsrooms are often the envy
of visiting colleagues. Using our Apple Mac workstations you learn sound
and video editing, lighting, sound production, magazine layout and digital content production developing expertise in the
same software used by professionals across the country.
You also have access to all of the equipment you need to produce professional-standard output: video cameras, microphones, digital sound recorders, 360-degree video cameras, lights, tripods and
kits to use your phones as portable tv studios.
Our teaching spaces are complemented by two radio
studios, and a teaching TV studio.
Graduate employability
Our graduates get great jobs. It’s
as simple as that. The best of them are offered positions before they have even
graduated. Our alumni are working at organisations including – to name just a
few – the BBC, ENVY Post Productions, Sky, Reuters, The Sun, The Financial Times, Channel 5, the
Daily Mail, ITV, Buzzfeed, The Huffington Post, Vogue, the South China Morning
Post, ITV Productions and at newspapers the length and breadth of the UK.
We have unique work
placement arrangements in place with Sky News, the Daily Mail, KMTV and the KM
Group. And our staff’s amazing industry connections can help you find placements in the kind of places in which you're aiming to
find full-time work.
Storytellers of the future - graduating class of 2019
Life at the University of Kent is not only about learning professional skills. We recognise that the best storytellers are those that understand the world around them. And for that you need a grounding in serious academic skills alongside your vocational
training.
Our core degrees have
significant and challenging academic components in history, law, regulation, visual theory and more. We have close teaching links
to other university departments including Digital Media, Audio Technology, Politics and International Relations,
History, Law, Business and Social Policy.
Location
We are based on the
University's Medway
campus with its exceptional study resources and relaxing social
spaces. In the Drill Hall Library, you can study in the way that best suits you
in our silent, quiet and group study spaces, take advantage of the free Wi-Fi
and get advice from our friendly staff.
When you put your books down, you can
move on to The Deep End, a bar and entertainment space run by the students' union.
Off campus there is plenty to do in
the local towns, and of course London is less than an hour away by train.
