Work off campus (Kent VPN service)

Access files and IT services on the Kent network from off campus using the VPN (Virtual Private Network). VPN works from off campus only. The VPN is for your use only - don't let others use your connection.

Limitations of the VPN

Register for VPN access

If you're new to the VPN, or you haven't used it at least twice between 4 April - 3 October 2016, you need to register to use the VPN. This is a security precaution that will help keep our network secure.

Visitors/contractors can ask for VPN access: send your Kent IT Account username.

Set up your VPN connection

Before running the VPN setup tool, you must optimise your security settings and remove/disable file sharing software in order to abide by University IT regulations.

Virgin Media SuperHub users

Before connecting to the Kent VPN, you will need to log in to your router, usually by going to this address: http://192.168.0.1

  • Put in your username & password for the router. If you haven’t changed this it will be written on the back of the router, or on an information card attached to it.
  • Go to Advanced Settings
  • In the ‘Firewall’ section tick the box next to PPTP Pass-Through
  • Now if you haven't done it yet, you can set up your connection on your device. Once that's done too, you should be able to connect.
