Work off campus (Kent VPN service)

Access files and IT services on the Kent network from off campus using the VPN (Virtual Private Network). VPN works from off campus only. The VPN is for your use only - don't let others use your connection.

Register for VPN access

Set up your VPN connection

Before running the VPN setup tool, you must optimise your security settings and remove/disable file sharing software in order to abide by University IT regulations.

Virgin Media SuperHub users

Before connecting to the Kent VPN, you will need to log in to your router, usually by going to this address: http://192.168.0.1

  • Put in your username & password for the router. If you haven’t changed this it will be written on the back of the router, or on an information card attached to it.
  • Go to Advanced Settings
  • In the ‘Firewall’ section tick the box next to PPTP Pass-Through
  • Now if you haven't done it yet, you can set up your connection on your device. Once that's done too, you should be able to connect.

Windows 10

Some services including SharePoint and OWA (Outlook Web access) don’t work with Windows 10 over the VPN. You need to disconnect from VPN to use them.

Is your version of Windows 32-bit or 64-bit? To check, type bit version in the windows search and choose See if you have a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows from the results screen. The bit version is included in the system name/type, under the About section.

Problems with the download?

If the download failed, have you got another VPN connection with the same name? Remove any old connections and try to run the tool again. You can also set your connection up manually (pdf guide)

Some services including SharePoint and OWA (Outlook Web access) don’t work with Windows 10 over the VPN. You'll need to disconnect from VPN to use them until Microsoft fix this.

Windows 8

Is your version of Windows 32-bit or 64-bit? To check, right-click Computer and select Properties. The bit version is included in the system name/type, under the system section.

Problems with the download?

If the download failed, have you got another VPN connection with the same name? Remove any old connections and try to run the tool again. You can also set your connection up manually (pdf guide)

Mac

Install FortiClient for Mac

Please do not skip step 6

  1. Download FortiClient from www.forticlient.com and open the file named forticlientonlineinstaller.dmg
  2. Double click FortiClientUpdate (and click Open if asked). The FortiClient installer will be downloaded.
  3. When the progress bar is full click Install. If it says 'failed to connect', click Cancel and return to step 2.
  4. Click Continue then Continue then Agree to the licence confirmation.
  5. If asked select Install for all users of this computer then Continue.
  6. Click Customize then untick Other components .
  7. Click Install at the bottom right of the window – you might be asked for your macOS password.
  8. You should see Installation complete. Click Close.
  9. Open FortiClient from either Applications (within Finder), search in the Spotlight box or click the black sheild (in the menu at the top of your screen).
  10. Click Remote Access on the left menu
  11. Click the cog/gear icon next to VPN Name
  12. Click Add new connection
  13. Enter these settings
    • VPN Type: SSL VPN
    • Connection name: Kent VPN
    • Description: Kent VPN
    • Remote Gateway: vega.kent.ac.uk
    • Leave 'Customize port' unticked
    • Client Certificate: none
    • Leave 'Save login' ticked next to Authentication
    • Type your Kent username into 'Username' field, for example abc123
    • Click Add.

Did you install the Anti-Virus component?

Step 6 of the installation instructions explained how to not install the web filtering and anti-virus components, if you missed that step then you can complete the following to disable them.

  1. Open FortClient, click AntiVirus on the left menu, click the cog/gear icon next to the word Status
  2. Untick scan files as they are downloaded or copied to my system
  3. Untick block all accesses to malicious websites, click done
  4. Click web security on the left hand panel
  5. Click disable next to web security enabled

Connect to the Kent VPN

  1. Click the black shield icon (in the menu in the top right of your screen)
  2. Click Connect to the Kent VPN
  3. Enter your Kent IT Account username and password and click Connect.

 

Disconnect from the Kent VPN

  1. Click the black shield icon (in the menu along the top of your screen)
  2. Click Disconnect from Kent VPN.

iPhone and iPad

Install FortiClient for iOS

  1. Install FortiClient from the App store
  2. Run the FortiClient App.
  3. Allow the App to create VPN configurations on your device.
  4. In the FortiClient VPN window choose select connection then choose Add Configuration.
  5. Fill in the following details and select Done when finished:

Name: Kent VPN (FortiClient)
Host: vega.kent.ac.uk
Port: 443
User: leave blank
Password: leave blank

To connect to the VPN

  • Go to the FortiClient App
  • Move the slider next to VPN to on
  • Enter your Kent IT Account username and password when asked.
    • If you see a permissions error, make sure 'auto correct' isn't changing your username.

Android

From your home screen go to:

  1. Settings
  2. More networks
  3. VPN
  4. Tap on the plus (+) symbol
  5. Name: KentVPN
  6. Type: PPTP
  7. Server address: vulcan.kent.ac.uk
  8. Save
  9. Go back to Settings
  10. Tap on VPN
  11. Tap on KentVPN
  12. Username: your Kent ID (eg abc1)
  13. Password: your Kent password
  14. You are now connected to the Kent VPN

Any other devices

VPN doesn't work on:

To set up VPN on other operating systems such as Linux:

  • VPN type: PPTP
  • Server name: vulcan.kent.ac.uk
  • See the guides within your relevant operating system above for further instructions

 

Check whether your connection is secure

For most Kent sites and services, your browser will automatically check the connection is secure and provided by Kent.

If it's secure, you'll see a padlock symbol   in your browser's address bar. You can click this for more details.

Using the VPN - how to log in

Windows 10

  1. Click the network icon in the system tray (near the time):

  2. Select the Kent VPN Connection from the list.
  3. In the Network and Internet screen that appears make sure VPN is selected on the left. Select Kent VPN from the list of VPN connections.
  4. Click Connect
  5. Enter your Kent IT Account username: username and your password
  6. Logon Domain: UKC
  7. Click Connect. After a short while you will be connected to the Kent VPN.

Windows 8 and 7

  1. From the Desktop, click the network icon in the system tray (near the time):

  2. Select the Kent VPN Connection from the list and click Connect.
  3. Enter your Kent IT Account username: username and your password
  4. Logon Domain: UKC
  5. Click Connect. After a short while you will be connected to the Kent VPN.

 

Windows Vista

  1. Click Start then Connect To
  2. Click your Kent VPN connection in the list, and click Connect
  3. Enter your Kent IT Account username: username and your password
  4. Logon Domain: UKC
  5. Click Connect.

Mac, iPad or iPhone

To connect on a Mac: When online, click the VPN icon (top right), click the connection you created and log in.

To connecton an iPad or iPhone: go to your Settings, find VPN and switch to ON.

Android

  • Tap Settings
  • Tap on VPN and then KentVPN
  • Username: your Kent IT Account username
  • Password: your Kent password

You are now connected to the Kent VPN.


How to access your files and folders

Before you can view your files and folders, you'll need to:

Reconfiguring your VPN

To reconfigure your VPN, you need to remove your old VPN then install the VPN again.

Removing the VPN

Windows 10

  1. Type VPN in the windows search, and choose Change virtual private networks (VPN) from the results screen.
  2. Select the Kent VPN connection and click Remove.
  3. Confirm the removal by clicking Remove again.

Windows 8

  1. From the Start screen click Desktop, then click the File Explorer icon (bottom left) and select Network from the left menu.
  2. Click Network and Sharing Centre from the ribbon at the top.
  3. In the left-hand menu click change adapter settings.
  4. Right-click on a connection, then select Delete and OK to confirm.

Windows 7 and Vista

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Make sure View by (top right of the Control Panel) is set to either Large icons or Small icons, then click Network and Sharing Center.
  3. If using Windows 7 click Change adapter settings, if using Windows Vista click Manage network connections.
  4. Right-click on a connection, then select Delete and OK to confirm.

Mac

  • In System Preferences go to Network.
  • From your list your current connections, choose the Kent VPN (its name will be whatever you chose to call it when you set up the connection).
  • Use the minus button at the bottom of the list to delete it.

 

VPN activity is your responsibility

When using the VPN remember that your device is on the Kent network and you are responsible for all activity.

Disconnect from Kent as soon as you are finished: do not browse the web using this connection, it will be slow and slows down the Kent network.
