Entry requirements: Australia

At Kent we consider all applications on their individual merit and welcome students with a wide variety of qualifications and experience. Below you will find standard entry requirements for students with Australian qualifications. Please note that some departments may have slightly different entry criteria.

Foundation programme entry requirements

Some programmes offer a Foundation Year as part of a 4-year undergraduate programme. We also offer a one-year International Foundation Programme (IFP), which has been designed especially for international students and guarantees entry onto the full undergraduate programme on successful completion of the Foundation. This programme includes English language development plus specialist options in Humanities (leading to Literature, Drama, Film, Architecture, History etc); Social Sciences (Law, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, International Relations, Psychology etc) and Sciences (Electronics, Computing, Biosciences etc).

For International Foundation Programme (IFP):

To gain entry on to the IFP programme, you need the following:

  • A good academic school-leaving certificate with particular strengths in subjects that are relevant
    to your intended area of study
  • GCSE grade C Maths or equivalent for some degree programmes. If you do not have this level
    of qualification, you will need to take the IFP Maths module
  • 5.0 IELTS (with no less than 5.0 in each band) or equivalent.

For other Foundation Year programmes:

  • IELTS 5.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component 
  • We also accept Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency C, Cambridge Advanced Certificate Grade B

How to apply:

There are three ways of applying for the International Foundation Programme:

  1. Online, using our direct application form.
  2. Through one of our authorised representatives in your own country.
  3. Via the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS).You can find detailed instructions on how to apply at www.ucas.com/students/apply/

Applications for other foundation year programmes can be made via UCAS or directly to the University via one of our authorised representatives in your own country. We welcome applications throughout the year, but it is advisable to apply early to avoid disappointment.

Undergraduate entry requirements

The table below indicates Kent's current minimum undergraduate entry requirements for students with Australian qualifications. This is a guide to minimum requirements only - applications and qualifications will be considered on an individual basis. ATAR rankings will be considered in conjunction with your school leaving qualifications.

Queensland Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) with 20 HA credits and an OP of 10-12
South Australia South Australia Certificate of Education (SACE) with grades BBBBB in five stage 2 subjects
Victoria Victoria Certificate of Education (VCE) with at least six units at level 3 and 4 and average score of 34
Western Australia West Australia Certificate of Education (WACE) with an average grade of 70 in four course subjects
Upper secondary school leaving qualifications from other states and territories will be considered on an individual basis

Second year entry

The University will consider students on an individual basis for second year entry if they have successfully completed a course of academic study from a reputable institution, with studies of a similar content and level to Year 1 of the relevant Kent degree.

English Language Requirements: If English is not your first language, you will need to demonstrate your English language ability. The University of Kent accepts:

  • IELTS 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in Reading and Writing  
  • We also accept Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency Grade C and Cambridge Advanced Certificate Grade B.

Postgraduate entry requirements

The University considers students for postgraduate study who have completed a four year honours degree (BA/BSc/BEng) achieving a good result from a reputable overseas institution or a good UK honours degree.

English Language Requirements: If English is not your first language, you will need to demonstrate your English language ability. The University of Kent accepts:

  • IELTS 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in Reading and Writing  
  • We also accept Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency Grade C and Cambridge Advanced Certificate Grade B.
  • Except postgraduate degrees in the School of English, Kent Business School, and Kent Law School which require IELTS 7.0

MBA and postgraduate business programmes

Postgraduate

To apply for a postgraduate taught programme at Kent Business School applicants need to submit:

  • Proof of academic achievement. This normally would be an honours degree (2:1 or above) from a UK or other approved university and/or an equivalent professional qualification.
  • A ‘Statement of Purpose’ outlining your reasons for applying to the programme. A programme specific essay may be required for borderline applications.
  • Two references at least one of which must be academic.
  • Proof of English Language proficiency, please see below

English Language Requirements

  • IELTS 7.0 (no less than 6.5 in reading and writing)
  • Cambridge Advanced Certificate A

In addition applicants applying for the MSc Value Chain Management programme who meet the admissions criteria will be required to have a personal telephone interview with the Programme Director as part of the admissions process.

Kent MBA programme

You can apply for the Kent MBA online via the University of Kent's online prospectus.Please ensure all supporting documentation is submitted with your online application form or scanned and emailed to kentmba@kent.ac.uk. You will be required to show the originals of your scanned documents when you come to enrol onto the programme. On receipt of your online application, you will receive an acknowledgement email. 
All applicants who meet the admissions criteria will be required to have a personal telephone interview with the Programme Director as part of the Admissions process.

What entry requirements do you need?

To apply for the Kent MBA you will need to submit:

  • A completed online application form
  • Proof of academic achievement. This normally would be an honours degree from a UK or other approved university and/or an equivalent professional qualification. Exceptions will be considered for senior managers with more than ten years work experience.
  • A 'Statement of Purpose' outlining your reasons for applying to the programme. A programme specific essay may be required for borderline applications.
  • A full and detailed curriculum vitae (CV) or résumé in which you demonstrate your career progression. A minimum of three years' managerial work experience is required to apply for the Kent MBA.
  • Copy of the photo ID page of your current passport for UKVI immigration regulations. (International Students only)
  • Two professional references, one of which must be from your current employer covering at least two years' experience.
  • Applicants are required to take the GMAT and achieve a good test score, which is balanced across all parts of the GMAT. A minimum GMAT score of 580 or equivalent GRE score will be required from students (Comparison tool:www.ets.org/s/gre/flash/bschool/comparison). Lower test scores will be considered on a case by case basis at the discretion of the Programme Director. Those applicants with five or more years of work experience or who already hold a Masters degree will be required to submit a 'GMAT waiver form' with their application form. The GMAT requirement may be waived only at the discretion of the Programme Director and only in exceptional circumstances.

PhD

If you would like to pursue a PhD at Kent, you should visit the relevant department website to identify potential supervisors for your research and thesis. You are encouraged to then make direct contact with the appropriate academic to discuss your research proposal.

If the academic is interested in considering you as a PhD candidate, you will be required to submit a written research proposal for your PhD and may then subsequently be asked to complete the postgraduate application form.

English Language Requirements: If English is not your first language, you will need to demonstrate your English language ability. The University of Kent accepts:

  • IELTS 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in Reading and Writing  
  • We also accept Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency Grade C and Cambridge Advanced Certificate Grade B.

Please note that students may be asked for higher English language grades depending on departments.
