William Butler

Assistant Lecturer

History (Rutherford N4.4 & N4.5)

Having been brought up in Swansea, South Wales, William undertook his undergraduate degree in War Studies at the University of Kent, during which his interest in the history of the British Army was sparked. His Masters studies, at Kent, inspired his research into recruitment and propaganda in Ireland during the First World War, which became the topic for his dissertation.

As a continuation of his studies at the University of Kent, William is currently undertaking a study of the Irish Amateur Military Tradition in the British Army, c.1854-1945, which will form his PhD thesis. In addition to this he has contributed a chapter to an edited volume (I. Beckett (edt.), Citizen Soldiers and the British Empire) released in August 2012.

William’s non-research interests include shouting at sport, particularly football, and fine ales.
