In Conversation with Ian Rankin
On Saturday 7 November 2015, the University's Chancellor, Gavin Esler, welcomed Ian Rankin OBE to the University for the second In Conversation of the 2015/16 academic year. The event followed Gerald Scarfe CBE's visit earlier in the term.
Ian Rankin released his latest Inspector Rebus novel, 'Even Dogs in the Wild' on 5 November and fans of the series were keen to meet him and get their copies of the book signed when he arrived at the University's Canterbury campus on the Saturday evening.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow, introduced the event and welcomed Gavin Esler and Ian Rankin to the stage. For the next hour, the pair discussed a huge range of topics, from Inspector Rebus, good and evil, and the position of crime novels within the broader context of literature.
Questions which had been sent in by email and via Twitter with #GavinAsks were posed to Ian Rankin. The floor was also opened for questions from the audience in attendance, who duly quizzed him on Scottish football, the state of modern publishing and much more.
After the talk, there was a high table dinner in Darwin Conference Suite. Money raised from the sale of tickets for this part of the event will go towards the Kent Opportunity Fund.
