The University of Kent and Kent Law Society are delighted to welcome Baroness Shami Chakrabarti CBE to give the annual Keith Tucker Memorial Lecture for 2017.

This lecture not only honours Keith and Marga Tucker this year, but also District Judge Edwina Miller, former President of the Kent Law Society and the first ever female national President of the Association of District Judges, who sadly passed away this summer.

WOMEN AND THE LAW; INSTITUTIONAL INEQUALITY AND THE CASE FOR RADICAL CHANGE

Diversity in the workplace is a common theme of late and is commonplace in judicial environments, surely? Shami Chakrabarti has first-hand experience in this area, giving an insider's view through this lecture of where women are in these judicial environments and what legal protections, if any, they are given.

Baroness Chakrabarti CBE is Shadow Attorney General for England and Wales, joining the Labour Party in 2016 after leaving her position of Director for human-rights organisation, Liberty.

Shami is also currently the Chancellor for the University of Essex, having previous held positions of Chancellor and Honorary Professor of Law at Oxford Brookes University and the University of Manchester respectively.

This will be followed by a drinks reception for attendees of the lecture.
