Procedures for removals and disposal of unwanted furniture and computer equipment

Service Procedures

Removals

  • Where there are only a small number of items, removal will be carried out by Estates staff. Where it is beyond their capacity a removal contractor will be employed.
  • The majority of minor removals will be offered as a free service, unless the removal time falls outside the hours of 11am to 3pm from Monday to Friday, or if the staff have to leave the campus, in which case mileage and time will be charged.
  • If a removal contractor or rental of storage containers is required please see the Interior Services web page.
  • Items for removal must be packed and clearly labelled with destination unless otherwise arranged.
  • Please flat pack boxes after use and advise us of the collection point.
  • Advice for re-locating IT equipment during office moves.

Unwanted equipment

  • We are able to collect unwanted computer equipment for disposal to a contractor for recycling. Please download and fill in a disposals form and send it back to us (via email or internal post).
  • Computers contain heavy metals and should therefore be disposed of in an environmentally-friendly manner. They should NOT be put into a skip for disposal as there is the possibility of water course contamination if put into a land fill site. This could render the University liable to prosecution.
  • We are able to collect unwanted items of furniture and equipment for storage in the central store prior to redeployment or disposal as appropriate.
  • Collection of large quantities of furniture may be arranged by an external contractor if appropriate. Furniture will be evaluated to determine the possibilities for redeployment, for sale or for disposal as scrap.
  • Any proceeds from sales will be credited to your expenditure code, subject to a handling charge.
  • Furniture for scrap will be disposed of by the most economical means but any costs will be charged to your cost code.
