Electrical maintenance

Joy Varghese is the Electrical Manager and is responsible for maintaining and repairing electrical supplies across the campus. Estates has a team consisting of eight Electricians, four Maintenance Assistants and one Apprentice Electrician.

Approximately 9000 defects are received each year plus a comprehensive preventative maintenance schedule is also undertaken. Examples of work include:

  • Reinstating lost power
  • Statutory emergency light and fire alarm testing
  • Repairing internal and external lights
  • Monitoring the Building Management System (Ventilation, lighting & power)
  • Managing mechanical ventilation (Fans)
  • Testing/ repairing electrical appliances

The Electrical department operates a 24/7 emergency call out service. In the event of a electrical emergency, outside of normal working hours (08:00 - 16:30), contact Campus Watch (3300) who will make the necessary arrangements for the duty electrician to attend.

All approved Electricians are qualified to the 17th edition wiring regulations (City and Guilds) and the department is a registered member of the NICEIC (National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting).

Alex Watson, Senior Building Services Engineer, co-ordinates the supply and installation of new electrical work such as; sockets, network points and lighting. Requests for this type of work should be submitted via our 'Rechargeable Works Request' system.

Specialist contractors are used to service and repair items such as air conditioning, lifts, fire alarm systems fixed wire testing in buildings.

   

Reporting defects

Building defects should be reported through our online defect report page or via telephone to the Estates Customer Services (16666).

All defects are issued with a priority according to our Service Level Statement.
