Case study: Centre for Child Protection

The Centre for Child Protection is a hub of excellence in professional training and research for professionals working to safeguard and protect children.

Following the Munro Review (2011), academic staff from the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research at the University of Kent identified a sector need for research-led and rigorous Continuing Professional Development and child protection training.

Kent’s vision was to launch a part-time distance learning Master's in Advanced Child Protection and to develop a number of child protection simulations.

The Master's course successfully started in January 2013, with a variety of child protection professionals from all over the UK and internationally, currently using the interactive materials. Moreover, the development of child protection simulations has been extremely successful. ‘Rosie 1’ the prototype was successfully launched in 2011; 'Rosie 2' - neglect in 2012; and forthcoming for launch in 2013 'Zak' a simulation on an aspect of internet grooming (built with Kent Police and KCC) and 'Visiting Elliot' which tackles a visit to a sexual offender on licence in the community (built with Kent Police and Kent Probation). All the simulations are inter-professional and based upon rigourous academic research. Details of all of these innovative training tools can be gained by contacting

"Collaborative working across the University has turned an idea into a reality, and created a sought-after, commercially viable training solution for the Children’s Services sector. Projects like the Centre for Child Protection show that Kent is not only at the forefront of academic innovation, we are also wholly capable of first identifying and then meeting the specific needs of industry."
