My first novel, This Bleeding City (Faber & Faber), was an international bestseller, translated into 12 languages and winner of the Spear's and Edinburgh Festival First Book Awards. It was selected as one of Waterstone's New Voices 2010. My second, The Revelations, was a top-5 bestseller in the UK and was shortlisted for the Guardian's Not the Booker Award. My short stories have been longlisted for the EFG Sunday Times Short Story Award, shortlisted for the Manchester Fiction Prize, and have appeared in a number of journals and anthologies including Best British Short Stories 2013. I am a regular panelist on the BBC2 Review Show and Radio 4's Saturday Review, as well as writing for the Observer, the New Statesman and the Guardian. My next novel, In Love and War, will be published by Faber in August 2014.
I am interested in the modern novel, and particularly in the ways that literature has responded to the violence of the 20th century. I am obsessed with Lydia Davis, JM Coetzee, Roberto Bolaño and WG Sebald. I write, teach and read more short stories than anything else and believe that the short form - because of changing technologies, brains and writing styles - is the medium of the Internet Age.
