Research degrees

The School of English is a research intensive department where postgraduate students are given the opportunity to work with academics who are internationally recognised in their respective fields. As a postgraduate student you will be part of an established and thriving research culture which encourages its students to develop both as academics and as expert researchers. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (2014) the School ranked 10th out of 89 English Departments for Research Intensity (THE) with 74% of our work graded as world-leading or internationally excellent. Staff supervise research in most areas of English and associated study but specialise in the following areas:

  • women's writing
  • literature and visual arts
  • the enlightenment
  • Shakespeare and the renaissance
  • early modern literature
  • medieval studies
  • American literature
  • postcolonial literature and theory
  • modern poetry

Those applying for School of English MA by Research programmes, including visiting student applicants, must complete the MA by Research application form. Those applying for School of English PhD programmes must complete the PhD application form. This is in addition to applying via the University's online application system.
