Kent Experiences of Work

Apply for a bursary to help with expenses

Content Block Header Image

If you have secured some unpaid work experience (within the UK), you could be entitled to the B-KEW bursary. Alternatively, Go Abroad advertise some funding for international work experience.

What can I use the bursary for?
This bursary will contribute towards out-of-pocket travel expenses. Terms and conditions apply.

In exceptional circumstances, you may also be eligible for additional funds to contribute towards costs incurred by undertaking work experience, for example childcare costs or uniform.

Am I eligible?
In addition to the Terms and conditions, you must:

  • You must be a student registered with the University of Kent, studying in the UK.
  • Your work experience must be unpaid.
  • Your work experience must be graduate level.
  • You can claim the bursary against costs incurred in the first 3 weeks (or 120 hours) of your work experience.

When is the deadline for applying?

There is no final deadline. Eligible applications will be awarded a bursary on a first-come-first-served basis. We are allocated a specific budget on an annual basis, and when it's gone, it's gone.

Can you find me work experience?

The Careers and Employability Service are here to support you, through drop-in sessions and online resources, however it is the responsibility of each student to find their own placement. Here are some useful links to help you in your search:

Q: I have recently completed my work experience. Can I still apply?
A: Yes, as long as you have evidence of your expenses, such as travel tickets or receipts.

Q: Can I claim a bursary for volunteering?
A: You may be able to claim for volunteering expenses, however, the voluntary placement must be graduate level work. You may only claim expenses for the first 3 weeks (or 120 hours) of the duration of your voluntary placement. You can also record your volunteering hours through the Kent Union toolkit. By doing this, you can gain recognition for the volunteering that you do by working your way through the KSCV awards ranging from 25 hours (Bronze) to 200 hours (Gold +), alongside completing other criteria which will help you reflect on your personal development as a volunteer. This information is then included on your HEAR record.

Q: What do you consider to be 'graduate level' work experience?
A: Graduate level work experience counts as tasks and responsibilities that mimic graduate level work. This, for example, does not include making tea and photocopying.

Q: Does work shadowing count as 'graduate level' work experience?
A: If you are able to fully articulate what benefit you will gain from the work-shadowing experience, then your application will be considered.

Q: What do you consider to be appropriate uniform?
A: Clothing/footwear considerate of the working environment in which you are placed, eg. shirt/blouse, smart skirt/trousers. No single item must cost more than £75.00. Must be supported by original receipt(s).

Q: What type of childcare would be eligible?
A: Registered carer or pre-arranged nursery placement only. Must be supported by official receipt of payment/invoice.
