Course overview

Discover how spoken and written language is used in various social, political, cultural, and philosophical contexts, exploring its relationship with the mind and society as a whole. Study works from the medieval through to contemporary, exploring literature that gives us an insight into other people’s lives and allows us to embark on journeys of self-discovery. Course structure

You'll start by exploring the structure of language, foundations of linguistics and speech sounds. You then move through sociolinguistics, the study of meaning and communication, stylistics to explore texts, and the global spread of the English language.

How you'll study

Teaching involves a combination of lectures and seminars, and there may be additional workshops, discussion groups and practical sessions.
