Do you like maths and working with young people? Are you thinking about becoming a teacher? Mathematics with Secondary Education is a three-year programme leading to an honours degree and a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Mathematics with Secondary Education (QTS) is part of an exciting collaboration between Kent and the Faculty of Education at Canterbury Christ Church University.
You can specialise in mathematics and statistics while developing as a creative and reflective teacher at secondary level.
You spend Year 1 studying alongside students on the BSc Mathematics programme at the University of Kent. We offer small group tutorials to help you with the transition from school to university-level maths.
In Year 2, you attend the compulsory Mathematics Education module at Canterbury Christ Church. In addition, you continue studying a range of mathematics modules at Kent.
During Year 3, most of your modules take place at Christ Church. But you also have the opportunity to undertake a project related to mathematics teaching at the University of Kent during the spring term.

You have access to professional mathematical and statistical software such as Maple and R.
Through Kent’s Templeman Library you also have access to a wide range of topical journals and books in hard copy and digital format.
Your designated academic advisor provides guidance for your academic and professional development throughout your studies. You can also receive academic peer mentoring in your second year.

An A2 level at grade B in Mathematics is required. GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade C or above (or acceptable equivalents) are also required.

Year 1 is spent studying alongside students on the BSc Mathematics programme at the University of Kent.

Teaching methods are varied, with a particular emphasis on student participation and active learning. Work in school is overseen by a mentor (an experienced teacher in the school) who liaises with a link tutor from the University.
During the programme you spend a significant amount of time learning to teach in schools and other education settings, which may be both local and international. There is a range of contrasting experiences of teaching in terms of age groups, type, size and location.
For a student studying full time, each academic year of the programme will comprise 1200 learning hours which include both direct contact hours and private study hours. You gain some associated school experience during your second year of study in a partnership school in Kent. In your final year, you gain more substantial experience in a number of different secondary schools. You are assigned an experienced teacher from the school as a mentor during your placements.

After successful completion of your degree, Canterbury Christ Church University will recommend to the Department for Education that you should be awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You also need to pass the National Skills tests in English, Mathematics and ICT
