Hugo Genest

International Conflict Analysis MA at Brussels

I loved being able to study in English and graduate with a degree from a reputable British university while residing in Brussels.

Hugo Genest graduated from BSIS with an MA in International Conflict Analysis in 2008. That year, he joined the ranks of the Canadian Foreign Service, Immigration and Refugees stream. He was first posted to New York City in 2009, and to Port-au-Prince in 2011.While in Haiti, he worked, among other things, on the implementation of a resettlement project for women who had been victims of sexual violence in internally displaced people’s camps after the 2010 earthquake.

Hugo returned to Ottawa in 2013 to assume the position of a policy analyst in a unit that formulates policies for Canada’s temporary labour migrant program. In 2012, during a temporary assignment in Kenya, he worked on the resettlement cases of refugees from the Horn of Africa, the Congo and South Sudan.

“The analytical and drafting skills I acquired at BSIS have proven particularly relevant for my current role as a policy analyst, where I have to regularly write briefing notes and analytical pieces to inform senior decision-makers on various aspects of Canada’s temporary labour migrant program. In addition, learning about the causes and dynamics of war through my International Conflict Analysis curriculum has helped me do a better job when assessing cases of refugees from war-torn regions.”

“Personally, I loved being able to study in English and graduate with a degree from a reputable British university while residing in Brussels, a city with a central location in Europe and an affordable cost of living (and - let’s be honest - excellent beer!). BSIS offers the best of both worlds.”
