  • The eligibility criteria for the funding scheme also include a measure of whether a candidate resides in an area deemed to have participation rates in higher education which are below expected levels. This criterion, referred to as Participation of Local Areas, or POLAR, is used by the Office for Students to determine university widening access targets. The University of Kent uses POLAR4 quintiles in combination with household income to target its financial support. Awards are made to students who fall into POLAR4 quintiles 1 and 2 and who are under 21 on 30 September 2019, who also meet other eligibility criteria, and students who fall into any POLAR4 quintile and who are over 21 on 30 September 2019, who also meet other eligibility criteria. More information about (POLAR4) including postcode lookup data can be found on the Office for Students website. The calculations made by this calculator use POLAR4 MSOA data that was correct in June 2018, mapped to ONS postcode data available in May 2018. Please be aware that lookup files are very large and can be difficult to download.
