Professor Richard Holmes CBE

Richard Holmes is Professor of Military and Security Studies at Cranfield University and the Royal Military College of Science. A celebrated military historian, he taught military history at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. He has written and presented several television series, such as War Walks, and authored over a dozen books on military topics. In 1993 he rode on horseback from Mons to the River Marne, following the route of the British Expeditionary Force in 1914, and the ensuing book, Riding the Retreat, was published in 1995.
He joined the Territorial Army in 1965, rising to the rank of brigadier and was the first reservist to hold the post of Director of Reserve Forces and Cadets in the Ministry of Defence. He is currently Colonel of the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment. In 1986 he was appointed OBE (Military) and received the CBE in 1998.back to top
