Doctor of Letters

July 2007

Born in France in 1937, Marie Sygne Northbourne studied at the Sorbonne before coming to England in 1959. Ten years later, she became a Juvenile Court Magistrate and Chair of the Northbourne Park School. Under her guidance, it developed into a school with special French interest, enabling French children to study at the school for two years during which they followed the French curriculum while learning English.
During the 1980s, she was Chair of the highly-regarded Kent Opera which performed throughout the South-East.

In 1990 she became Chair of Kent Community Housing Trust (KCHT), a post she held for 16 years. She played a key role in the foundation of KCHT which provides care and support to elderly people and the disadvantaged young. Today it employs 1,800 people and has a £30m turnover. Although she stepped down as chair in October 2006, she remains on the Board of Trustees.
