About

Dr Virginia Franqueira received a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Twente (The Netherlands) in 2009, and a M.Sc. in Computer Science from the Federal University of Espirito Santo (Brazil) in 2003. She held a postdoc position at the University of Twente (Netherlands) from 2009 to 2011, then spent one year as information security consultant in the UK. She moved to academia in 2012, when she assumed a lecturer role at the University of Central Lancashire (UK), followed by a senior lecturer role at the University of Derby (UK) from 2014 to 2019. Since September 2019, she is a lecturer in cyber security at the University of Kent, part of Kent Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Cyber Security (KirCCS).

She is also Deputy Director of the Institute of Cyber Security for Society (iCSS) which was established in January 2021 and aims to foment multidisciplinary research.

Virginia's research interests span across digital forensics, cybercrime investigation, visual content analysis, and cyber security (engineering, assessment and management). She is particularly interested in the application of Machine Learning to tackle problems related to forensics, and in analysis or application of emerging technology to security and forensics.
