In the Department of Comparative Literature, we produce innovative and interdisciplinary research, working independently and collaboratively to extend knowledge in the field.

Research in the Department is wide-ranging and crosses national, linguistic, and disciplinary borders and all of our staff are active participants in the Centre for Modern European Literature and Culture. We produce research of the highest quality, which was recognised In the most recent Research Excellence Framework, where Comparative Literature as part of Kent's submission to Modern Languages and Linguistics was ranked 3rd in the UK, with 85% of published research graded ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.

The Department of Comparative Literature is an international research community. We have excellent links both within the University and nationally and internationally with other prestigious institutions and publishing houses.

Our staff work as editors on prominent journals including Holocaust Studies: A Journal of Culture and History, and also with academic publishers including Routledge and Palgrave.

Recent funding has come from the Leverhulme Trust, Wellcome and the British Academy.
