Excellence in Health Research
CHSS hosts the Kent Academic Primary Care Unit (KAPCU) led by Patricia Wilson, Professor of Primary and Community Care. With support from Health Education Kent, Surrey and Sussex, the KAPCU remit is to support the education and development of primary care practitioners and develop primary care research. KAPCU offers a BSc Management in Primary Care as an intercalated degree for undergraduate medical students and a postgraduate MSc in Applied Health Research with a strong research emphasis for qualified practitioners.
KAPCU involves existing staff from CHSS who have programmes of primary care research and provides opportunities for research fellowships for GPs,GP trainees and other qualified practitioners working in primary and community care. Research themes include self-management in long term conditions (Wilson), patient and public involvement (Wilson, Bates), patient experience of primary care services (Wilson) and social marketing in health care (Merritt).
We also have a significant portfolio of health services research. Staff in CHSS are involved in a wide range of primary care research including collaborative research on commissioning and service integration with local Clinical Commissioning Groups, the Kent and Medway Commissioning Support Unit and Kent County Council (Billings) and a project evaluating community based mental health services (Hotham). CHSS is also a partner in the Department of Health funded Policy Research Unit in Commissioning and the Healthcare System (PRUComm) which is directed by Professor Stephen Peckham. Current PRUComm research includes an on-going study on the development of Clinical Commissioning Groups.
