The CEWL course in English and Academic Skills for Exchange Students has been specially designed to help you familiarise yourself with key aspects of British academic culture and to give you the opportunity to experience a typical University of Kent study cycle.
The course introduces you to the main features of academic English and the study skills required to follow your university programme successfully. In addition, you will have the chance to discuss linguistic, cultural and social issues that may be of particular concern to you.
Accommodation is available from Sunday 9 September 2018 (14:00) until Saturday 15 September 2018 (10:00).
What you will learn
You will receive 25 hours intensive tuition from Monday 10 September to Friday 14 September 2018. The sessions will encourage you to practise and improve your academic and language skills through discussions, written work, oral exercises, group presentations and individual study. Sessions will be mainly in seminar and workshop format, aimed at giving you a thorough preparation for your studies at Kent.
You will practise the following academic skills:
- Taking part in seminar discussions
- Doing academic presentations
- Paraphrasing, summarizing and referencing
- Using academic vocabulary and grammar
- Apply critical thinking skills to your academic assignments
You will also learn:
- How to plan and structure an essay
- How to synthesise information from various sources, both written and oral
- The key features of academic style and convention

Course Fees and Accommodation
The course tuition fees are £210. In addition to this, Study Abroad Exchange students will be required to pay (price to be confirmed) if they wish to stay in on-campus accommodation for a total of (price to be confirmed) for tuition and accommodation. The Erasmus office at Kent will kindly be covering the accommodation costs for Erasmus Exchange students. Accommodation will be Bed and Breakfast on our Canterbury campus and is available from 14:00 on Sunday 9 September 2018 until 10.00 on Saturday 15 September 2018 when students will need to move to their main accommodation for the rest of the term / year.
