The Work-Study Scheme
Equipping students with the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the graduate workplace
The Work-Study Scheme supports Widening Participation students in overcoming barriers to accessing graduate-level work. Students undertake a series of activities designed to make them work-ready, ensuring that they are able to meet the requirements of the departments employing them. They are mentored throughout the application and interview process, and whilst working, by the Work-Study Team.
Not only will you gain enthusiatic team members and a student perpective on your work, the students gain immeasurable employability skills, preparing them for the world of work once they graduate.
How does it work?
We advertise your opportunity to Work-Study Students, and support them in applying for the role(s). You interview and select the candidate(s).
We undertake the paperwork to put them on the HR and Payroll systems, and undertake Right to Work checks. They are employed as temps, and are paid via timesheet by us and recharged to your cost code.
Please remember that students should not be working more than 15-20 hours per week during term time.
I have a vacancy - what are the next steps?
Please contact us so that we can provide you with a draft job description to work from, and to discuss your requirements. Students apply to us, we collate the applications and send them to you.
We can also support with the initial screening of applicants, as well as interview assistance if you require it.
Information can be found on the Human Resources webpages. If you would like support with shortlisting and/or interviewing candidates, please contact us.
What are the costs of employing a student in this way?
The rate of pay we suggest is Grade 1 pt 2, £8.68/hour (£9.94/hour with holiday uplift). There will be the usual on-costs of 26.5% added on for pension & NI.
