Getting experience in law: advice for first year law students

 

Most of the vacation schemes advertised by law firms specify that these are for students who are about to enter their final year. This is partly because these large firms recruit during the summer vacation for training contracts starting two years in the future and will therefore take a particular interest in their summer students, and partly to limit the numbers applying: these schemes are tremendously popular and may bring in hundreds of applications even when they are restricted to penultimate-year students.

So what can first-year students do to get experience in the law? Here are a few suggestions:
