According to Pliny the Elder, the first drawing was by a woman. Legend has it that the Corinthian Dibutades traced the shadow of her lover on a cave wall, yet this once popular legend contradicts the archaeological record. Cave painting predates the Graeco-Roman world by several thousand years, and the gender of the creators of prehistoric art is not known. What is known is that since antiquity women have participated in the visual arts; whether as subject, maker or patron.
Spanning history and art movements, this course will not only consider the lives and work of these often marginalised female art makers, commissioners and collectors and the obstacles they faced but also the socio-cultural conditions that shaped them and the representation of women in the visual arts and the wider culture - whether that be idealised, demonised, objectified or sexualised. Definitely not in any way a feminist rant, but rather a journey of discovery for all.
No prior reading is required. A list of suggested reading will be provided during the course.
This course is suitable for all abilities, providing time to explore a subject for interest, among like-minded people, in an inclusive, supportive and friendly environment, without formal assessment.
Intended learning outcomes
By the end of the course students will be able to:
discuss a range of historical and contemporary socio-cultural issues and debates associated with the role of female art practitioners and patrons throughout the history of art.
consider a range of historical and contemporary socio-cultural issues and debates associated with the representation of women in art and culture.
be conversant with the lives and work of a number of once culturally marginalised and/or unrepresented female art practitioners.
About the tutor
Jan Annoot holds a joint BA (Hons) degree in the History and Theory of Art and English Literature, and an MPhil in the History and Philosophy of Art, both from the University of Kent, as well as a PGCE from Canterbury Christ Church University. Jan's wide-ranging teaching experience includes an eclectic range of Art History subjects at A Level, Access and, predominantly, degree level in a number of HE institutions. Jan has also been employed by the International Baccalaureate as an External Examiner (Visual Arts) and as External Moderator (Access to HE, specialising in Art) for the University of the Creative Arts for Laser Learning Awards.
Jan's research and teaching interests are also varied, but include the Body/Gender/Feminism, Nineteenth Century French Art and Culture, Orientalism, Modernism and Postmodernism and the Renaissance. Her introductory essay 'Mediating Desires' in Beautifully Obscene: The History of the Erotic Print Exhibition Catalogue (Beautifully Obscene: The History of the Erotic Print, Studio 3 Gallery, University of Kent) was published in May 2015.
