Leverhulme Trust Lecture: EU Media Law as a Method of European Integration

The Kent Centre for European and Comparative Law and the Centre for Film and Media Research warmly invite students and staff to a guest lecture with Professor Susana de la Sierra Morón, Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, Spain.

Abstract: Media and media law lie at the core of democracies and democratic institutions, as they are the key to build a free and informed political discourse which helps control government action, among other purposes. The EU has long dealt with media law, yet only timidly at the beginning and more audaciously later on. In this lecture a tentative approach to the concept of the media in the new media landscape is provided, including films in the more general framework of the audiovisual. The aims pursued by the EU when regulating the media are discussed and the relationship between the EU and the Council of Europe for these purposes is also presented. Recent debates on freedom of speech and the so-called fake news will also be discussed, mainly from the perspective of how the EU is dealing with it from an institutional point of view.

Bio: Professor Susana de la Sierra Morón was Director-General of the Spanish Institute for Cinema and Audiovisual Arts, the independent body responsible for the promotion of Spanish film, between 2012 and 2014. She is also an internationally recognized expert on comparative law and media-policy making as a method of European integration. The event is co-organized by the Centre for Film and Media Research (Dr Antonio Lázaro-Reboll) and the Kent Centre for European and Comparative Law (Dr Simone Glanert)
