The Pilgrims' Way Walk
Postgraduate Heritage Walk Series

Explore Canterbury's history of pilgrimage from Chilham to Canterbury with Julia Peters, PhD student in the Department of Classical & Archaeological Studies.

Follow in the footsteps of medieval pilgrims travelling to the shrine of Thomas à Becket at Canterbury Cathedral.  The route begins in the quaint town of Chilham, characterised by timber houses, the imposing Chilham Castle and a yew tree in the churchyard believed to be over 1300 years old. Enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Kent Downs, as we walk along the North Downs Way through woods, orchards and across chalky fields.  As we pass through the village of Chartham we shall leave the North Downs Way to follow the path along the Stour River.  One mile before Canterbury, the Cathedral comes into view, recalling the thrill pilgrims must have felt as they neared the pilgrimage site of the martyred saint. The walk will conclude in West Gate gardens.
