Can we manage cyber risk?
Joint SSPSSR/KirCCS seminar
Speaker: John Y, Head of Risk Research team, NCSC, GCHQ

It can sometimes feel like technology is just too complex to be managed securely. How can we possibly hope to get an accurate assessment of our cyber risks and then manage them effectively, when technology is in a state of continuous revolution? This pessimism is understandable, but in this talk the speaker will discuss reasons to be optimistic that Cyber Risks can indeed be managed, provided we think critically about the concepts we use to understand technological risks.

Speaker's Bio:

John Y is a senior researcher at the UK's National Cyber Security Centre where he leads the NCSC's Risk Research team. His main area of interest is in the development of novel cyber risk management techniques, partly through adapting techniques from outside cyber security, such as safety engineering and clinical risk management. He is currently pursuing a PhD at Lancaster University Management School, exploring the organisational impacts of the standardisation of cyber risk management. His background is in the natural sciences, having studied Physics to a Masters level, specialising in applied artificial intelligence.
