Peter Hughes
Creative Writing Reading Series

Peter Hughes will be joining us for the Creative Writing Reading Series on Tuesday, January 23. Peter is one of the most prolific and accomplished poets currently working in England. He was until recently the Judith E. Wilson Visiting Fellow in Poetry at Cambridge University. He is a poet, painter, musician and publisher of the award-winning Oystercatcher Press. Recent publications include a Selected Poems (Shearsman 2013), versions of Petrarch's complete sonnets, Quite Frankly (Reality Street 2015), and Cavalcanty (Carcanet 2017). A companion volume to Peter's Selected Poems was published by Shearsman (2013). Peter lives in Cambridge.

Here's what other poets have said of his work:

'Peter Hughes's vulgar eloquence fuses earthy, contemporary imagery with Cavalcanti's "elevated" elusive themes, converting his verses to an utterly original contemporary language ... and affording exquisite, tactile pleasure.'--Lou Rowan

'Hughes demonstrates something of genius, not merely by finding contemporary language to render the intoxication, despair, ambiguity and dead-ends of the Petrarchan subject- matter (Quite Frankly), but by deftly relocating it into a frame of reference which makes instant contemporary sense.'—Phil Simmons

Peter will read a range of poems in the first half, followed by a reading of his Leopardi poems, via Leopardi 21, just out from Equipage.
