What the Poet saw: Goethe's Travels in Italy, 1786-1788
Centre for Modern European Literature Lecture Series
Professor Osman Durrani

Abstract: At the age of thirty-seven, Goethe abandons his position as Poet in Residence and Privy Counsellor at the Court of Weimar. Under cover of darkness he sets off for an unknown destination. Adopting a series of false identities, he spends two years travelling through Italy as far as Sicily, via Rome and Naples. This talk will examine his motivation, discuss some of the high and low points of the journey, and assess its effects on his career and his re-integration into the society to which he was eventually obliged to return.
