Arriving at Discourses of Culture – Research Trajectory, Choices and Data
Centre for Language and Linguistics Invited Talk
Professor Adrian Holliday

Abstract: Research often grows from personal histories and experience. Methodological choices also respond to the research problems that arise in this trajectory. I will trace such a trajectory from undergraduate sociology, though professional experience of cultural imperialism in English language education, to studies of shifting and competing discourses of culture. I will then explain how this gets to the researcher as an implicated actor in the interview, and the interview as small culture formation on the go, which weaves between conflicting discourses and implicated grand and personal narratives, between prejudice and understanding.
