Intersections between Literature and Psychotherapy
Centre for Modern European Literature Research Seminars
Dr Francesco Capello (University of Kent) and Dr Alessandro Perissinotto (University of Turin)

This seminar will consist of a discussion between Dr Francesco Capello (University of Kent) and novelist Dr Alessandro Perissinotto (University of Turin).

The kinship between these two practices has been clear ever since Freud, who starting with Oedipus resorted to literary works and characters to describe his findings on our mental functioning. But there is more than that: indeed, both psychotherapy and literature share a unique interest in what might be called 'words that touch' (Quinodoz). It is mainly in his perspective that we will discuss them: as practices, processes, and bodies of knowledge we turn to in our ongoing attempt to learn what feelings do to us, and what we can do with them.

The session will be chaired by Dr Alvise Sforza Tarabochia.
