KENT magazine - Winter 2015

Fabulous at 50

Fabulous at 50

The University has celebrated its 50th anniversary with a range of exciting events, many of which have raised a large amount for charity. Kent staff enjoyed meeting alumni from around the world, to get them involved in the celebrations and update them on all the latest news from Kent. From two-ultra marathons and 'QI Live at Kent' to a Guinness World Record attempt and the first alumni reunion weekend in America – it’s been a busy year!

The battle of St Thomas' Hill

In 1964, Contract Manager Howard Bennett was charged with the daunting task of commencing work on the brand new University of Kent. Now in his 90th year, Howard has clear memories of this formidable task, including the pitfalls and challenges they faced along the way.

50th Festival highlights

50th Festival

Over 800 alumni, staff and former staff, students and friends of the University re-united at the Canterbury campus for the 50th Festival weekend on 4-6 September 2015 – the grand finale to Kent’s 50th anniversary year. From rocket building and bubble football to live music and stand-up comedy shows, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

'We are Kent' poem

To celebrate our 50th anniversary, we invited all Kent alumni, staff and friends to become co-authors of a crowdsourced poem. Poet and alumnus Dan Simpson (Rutherford, 2005) gathered everyone’s words and created this patchwork poetry masterpiece.
