The Honourable Charles Wigoder
BA Accountancy & Law (Rutherford 1978)
Charles Wigoder set up Cellular Communications in March 1988, initially providing a mobile phone service to business customers through both a direct sales team and third party distributors. He successfully positioned the company to take advantage of the opportunity presented by mobile technologies, creating the Peoples Phone brand as the world’s first virtual mobile network. The firm was purchased by Vodafone for £77 million in December 1996.
Charles won the Communications category in the UK Entrepreneur of the Year awards in 2001 and in 2009 he collected the award for Company of the Year at the Quoted Company Awards on behalf of Telecom Plus Plc. He is currently the executive chairman of Telecom Plus (The Utility Warehouse), which he joined in 1998 and has a turnover of nearly £500 million.
Charles made one of the largest donations ever to the University of Kent in the summer of 2013 when he provided a £1 million gift to the Kent Law Campaign, which will build a new home for Kent's award-winning Kent Law Clinic.back to top
