Excellence Initiative

A number of schemes have been developed out of the themes or linked to them. They aim to help individuals enhance their skills, abilities and reflective practice.

Kent Colleagues Connect 2018

Kent Colleagues Connect builds on a number of very successful pilot initiatives run by the Academic Division over the last couple of years which brought together nearly 300 participants. The scheme provides various opportunities throughout the year for informal meetings between colleagues. It is open to all those working at Kent, whether based in schools or in central departments, either in an academic or a professional services capacity.

Shadow Matching Scheme (pilot)

One of the offerings under the University's Fresh Eyes Scheme is the new Shadow Matching scheme. This initiative is intended to provide professional services staff with job shadowing opportunities across the University, to better understand the impact of their own work, and the work of others.

  • Open to all professional services staff
  • Works on the basis of a reciprocal arrangement between staff in school and central departments
  • Runs over the course of three half days in 2017

Coffee with Colleagues (pilot)

This is part of the Excellence Initiative and follows on from the very successful Shadow Matching pilot scheme which facilitated reciprocal visits between Schools and Central departments earlier this year. Participants in the Shadow Matching scheme reflected on how nice it had been to put a face to a name, and commented on how useful the visits had been in better understanding the other person’s role. This gave rise to the “Coffee with Colleagues” idea in order to provide colleagues across the University with a further opportunity to meet one another.

In the Autumn, staff in Schools/Faculties will be given the opportunity to invite a colleague from Central Services whom they either have never met in person or do not know very well, for a complimentary drink..

Fresh Eyes Scheme

The University’s Fresh Eyes scheme is an excellent opportunity for administrative staff to experience different roles across the University to better understand their own role within a wider context and to develop their knowledge base with a view to career progression.

Staff can shadow colleagues, swap roles with colleagues for a set period of time, or invite a colleague to act as a ‘critical friend’. It is envisaged that this scheme will enable staff to acquire new skills, build new working relationships and broaden their experience.

Mentoring Scheme

The University recognises the potential in promoting the use of mentoring to support and develop members of staff.
