The nature of the University is to encourage healthy debate, knowledge sharing and learning. A blog can accomplish these very quickly and effectively allowing authors to network, invite project collaboration, recruit, carry out and publish research, share teaching expertise, increase media coverage and increase profile.
The University of Kent now offers 'blogs.kent', a blogging service to promote, publicise, and enhance the activities of the university and the academic life of its members. Staff are encouraged to consider setting up a blog.
Features
For departments:
- Adds interactivity to your site whereby users, both members of staff and commenters on posts, can contribute to the site's overall content.
- Adds an additional voice and community aspect to your website.
- Allows users within and outside the department to help each other with pr contribute to various topics.
- Styled to look like part of your official departmental website, subsite, or a customised design.
For individual members of staff:
- Promote your work within the context of the University of Kent.
- Collaborate with other researchers in your area.
- Comments are open to any member of the public, so can open up debate on a much wider scale.
- Search engine ranking benefits from being associated with the University of Kent site.
Choose from a range of non-university designs (your blog can have one of the default themes, or a custom design, and not have a university look-and-feel).

- Complete administration panel which allows;
- Easily add new posts to your blog.
- Posts can be added from anywhere with an internet connection, even mobile devices such as iPhones.
- Moderate comments made on your blog posts.
- Option to allow open or approved comments
- Bar troublesome commentators.
- Filter certain words in comments.
- Blogs can either be provided in existing departmental, subsite, or derivative templates (if in the standard university template service), a custom design can be created (for a small charge), or for personal-work blogs one of the default Wordpress templates.
- All bloggers will be added to a mailing list where they can announce updates, discuss their blogs with other bloggers, or obtain community help. See the support tab for more details about the mailing list.
This blog service is only available to staff with a work contract with the University of Kent and not simply a University of Kent IT account. Requests for a blog, or access to a shared blog, from Kent undergraduates or postgraduates, users formally or informally associated with the University, or external users, will be assessed on a case by case basis.
