Figuring out the future: new maths and statistics support for all students
4 October 2010
The Student Learning Advisory Service (SLAS) in UELT has won an award of £6000 from sigma, the centre for excellence in university-wide provision of mathematics and statistics support. The funding will be used to provide dedicated maths and stats learning support within SLAS, open to Kent students from all disciplines and all levels of study. The programme is being run with the support and participation of the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science (SMSAS).
Congratulating Allia Wilson, manager of SLAS, on the successful bid, Professor Tony Croft, sigma director, commented that the judging panel were particularly impressed by the vision and clarity of the SLAS bid, and the heartfelt desire to provide students with maths and stats support.
Students are now able to book individual appointments with maths and stats advisors, hosted by SLAS. They will be able to gain advice, guidance and additional support in understanding more advanced principles involving either mathematics or statistics as well as developing and refining their understanding of the basics. As Allia commented, “My dream has been to ensure that all those needing help in these areas can achieve what they aspire to; with help from sigma, now this dream has become a reality.”
