Recognition & reward

University Teaching Prizes

Each year, the University awards a number of prizes to individual staff or teams for outstanding work in teaching and/or learning support. Applications are now invited for the 2012 awards.
For all prizes, the following general rules apply:

    • Applications may be made by individuals or teams; nomination is not required

    • Individuals may not apply for more than one prize

    • Previous applicants are welcome to resubmit a revised application

    • Selection panels may divide each prize into two or more awards, at their discretion, or decide not to award the prize

    • Advice on applications can be obtained from Faculty Directors of Learning and Teaching,  Directors of Graduate Studies, the relevant Faculty link tutor in Academic Practice Team at UELT, or from senior colleagues within your own Faculty or School.  Previous prizewinners may also be able to offer advice (a list of previous winners can be found here).

Prize money is made available for individual professional expenditure (e.g. conferences, professional development programmes, materials, equipment) by the prizewinner(s), through a University cost code.

The University Teaching Prizes will be awarded by the Vice Chancellor at a lunchtime ceremony on Thursday 4th  October 2012.

Faculty Teaching Prizes
Each Faculty awards an annual prize of £5,000. The only criterion for the Faculty Teaching Prizes is evidence of outstanding achievement in relation to teaching (which can include any aspect of the teaching role, and may be for individual or team work).
Applications are particularly welcome from colleagues who can demonstrate active engagement in developing their own practice, and in supporting and influencing the work of their colleagues. In all cases, applicants are expected to provide evidence of their impact on students and/or colleagues. There is no application form.

Applications should be no longer than 4 pages, and should be sent to Karen Morris (K.L.Morris@kent.ac.uk) in the Faculties Support Office by 10th May 2012.

Barbara Morris Prize for Learning Support
The criteria for the Barbara Morris Prize can be found here.  Again, there is no application form, and applications should be no longer than 4 pages.

Applications should be sent to Dr. Janice Malcolm (J.Malcolm@kent.ac.uk) in UELT by 10th May 2012.

National Teaching Fellowships
Each year the University nominates up to 3 candidates for the £10,000 National Teaching Fellowship individual awards, and to date five Kent colleagues have received the awards.  National Teaching Fellows are able to apply for project awards of up £200,000, and in 2008 Sally Fincher of Computer Science was the first Kent academic to win this funding.
The University's nomination procedures for 2011/12 have now closed.
Other details about the scheme are at http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/ourwork/professional/ntfs.
Prospective applicants are advised to consult with the relevant member of the Academic Practice Team before seeking nomination.

Promotion
The University now promotes academic staff on the basis of achievement and recognition across the full range of academic practice.  If you are thinking of applying for promotion and are seeking recognition for your achievements in teaching, the Academic Practice Team can offer individual advice on strategies for meeting promotion criteria.  We can also advise on applications for subject teaching prizes outside the University.

The Higher Education Academy Fellowship Scheme provides external professional recognition for Higher Education practitioners.  Colleagues who obtain the PGCHE are automatically entitled to claim Fellowship, whilst those who complete the 30-credit ATAP course can claim Associate Fellowship.  Experienced colleagues can also apply for Fellowship or Senior Fellowship of the HEA , and the Academic Practice Team can advise on the process for achieving this. We can also advise on applications for subject teaching prizes outside the University, and on disseminating your teaching development work beyond the University.
